Responding to clothing and its relationship to capitalist production and consumption, this Masters collection addresses the use and hierarchy of clothing, interrogating the ideals of excess and novelty and reverberations of depletion and absence characteristic of these systems.
Alongside generic and familiar contemporary garments, historical silhouettes are drawn on, considering the beginnings of fashion’s relationship to capitalist modes of mass overproduction.
Throughout the collection silhouettes are buckled, expanded and exaggerated through the application of folded layers inserted into the walls of garments, articulating a sense of glut and surplus. Empty, stripped back pieces are over washed, depleted and exhausted, attempting to be revived through a counter process of starching.
Derived from relinquished discarded and ‘hunted materials’, the fabric palette continues this interrogation of time and excess, reevaluating hierarchies within the use and life cycle of clothing and objects. Where new materials are integrated, these have undergone numerous processes of over-dyeing and washing, adding excess layers of colour and deteriorating existing pristine qualities.
‘the very first time in a while…’, Master of Fashion (Design) Graduate Show, 2021.
Presented by RMIT School of Fashion and Textiles and supported by The Capitol. Look Book image at The Capitol, photography by Myles Pedlar.
Based on the metaphor of ‘chasing the limelight’ and ‘holding the perfect pose’ the spectacular stage and in between spaces of the theatre are activated. Models pose, walk, look and linger; who will make it to centre stage? Is this dream happening?
The film and look book concept was conceived and pitched by the students working closely with Ricarda Bigolin and Kate Meakin.
