Inspired by Nepalese ethnicity and tourism, in particular the trekking bags worn by tourists, this collection consists of hybrid looks that contrast delicacy and form with the structure of respective artefacts. Silhouettes and proportion reference traditional Nepalese cultural dress and the inherited techniques of wrapping and draping layers of fabric around the body. In contrast the rigidity, volume and hardware of trekking bags applied with garment construction techniques define the juxtaposition of the scenario this collection is perceived in. The collection adapts and re-purposes products to showcase and enrich diverse cultures embracing sustainability; hardware and materials are re-used from end-life trekking bags and fabrics are either hand loomed in Nepal or sourced recycled cottons or polyester.
‘the very first time in a while…’, Master of Fashion (Design) Graduate Show, 2021.
Presented by RMIT School of Fashion and Textiles and supported by The Capitol. Look Book image at The Capitol, photography by Myles Pedlar.
Based on the metaphor of ‘chasing the limelight’ and ‘holding the perfect pose’ the spectacular stage and in between spaces of the theatre are activated. Models pose, walk, look and linger; who will make it to centre stage? Is this dream happening?
The film and look book concept was conceived and pitched by the students working closely with Ricarda Bigolin and Kate Meakin.
